It is one of the biggest automotive shopping let downs. Almost every car search site lists the SMG as a manual. You get all hyped up on a car only to get 3/4 of the way through the pics annnnnnd.. FUCK!

Yeah - any time I’m looking at E46 or E90 M3's online, I reflexively go STRAIGHT to the interior shots to look at the shifter.

My father had an SMG E46 M3 before I bought mine. He had it less than a year and sold it because of the SMG. However it’s not quite  as horrible as the internet wants you to believe. You have to be super focused on shifting, but after driving it for a while you can get it to act right and it is neat in a straight line. Still wouldn’t buy one.

Yeah, I’m sure it’s okay once you get the hang of it, but it does add some extra complexity, and it’s absolutely the less desirable transmission - the only way I would buy one is if I found a car that was exactly what I wanted except the SMG, and there was enough of a discount to a manual that I could spend the discount on a 3-pedal conversion.
